AN ECLECTIC LIBRARY.—Christian History.

St. Augustine.

The Works of Aurelius Augustine. Edited by the Rev. Marcus Dods, D.D. —These editions are printed neatly in single columns, and they work well with Google Books' OCR function. This page is also a museum of the Eclectic Library as it appeared many years ago.

S. Aurelii Augustini Confessiones: Edited by Car. Herm. Bruder, 1837

St. Augustine’s Confessions, with an English Translation by William Watts, 1631: Loeb edition, 1912

Volume 1

Volume 2

☛Watts’ translation is the one on which Pusey based his fussier version, which has unfortunately become the standard translation in English.

St. Augustine’s Confessions; or, Praises of God. In Ten Books. Newly translated into English from the original Latin.

☛Issued anonymously, this is actually the work of the famous Bishop Challoner, who revised (which is to say virtually retranslated) the Douay Bible. He omits the last three books.

This translation has been reprinted in a Serif Press edition, with the last three books filled in from the Pilkington translation (see below).
