During the Second World War, the United States War Department produced perhaps the best quick introductory manuals ever written for American English-speakers who needed to learn a little of a foreign language in a hurry. Each was meant to go with a series of records, but the manuals are so well conceived that most of the information is conveyed even without the recordings.
There were also a few large dictionaries for more advanced students.
