Bliss Carman.

Sappho: One Hundred Lyrics. By Bliss Carman. London: Chatto & Windus, 1921. —It would be hard to conceive of a more audacious project for a poet, and Carman pulls it off. He set out to rewrite the lost poetry of Sappho as if he were translating from the originals, though all he had to go on was a line or a few words for each lyric. The results are some of the most charming Greek translations in English, translated from almost entirely imaginary Greek.
